Novel Unit: Life of Pi
Welcome to our novel unit! This year we will be reading Life of Pi by Yann Martel.
This is an amazing and very well known novel famous for its courageous adventure and triumph.
Each class students will be required to read various chapters and participate in literary circles/discussion groups. Full participation and contribution is expected. In addition to this you will have various classwork assignments, quizzes, and creative projects to show your understanding and your ability to engage with the novel.

Life of Pi Introduction
This novel tells a heroic tale of survival, therefore getting to know both Piscine, the main character, and the writer, Yann Martel, are very important steps in fully experiencing and understanding this novel.

Life of Pi Part One
The first section of this novel is based on Pi's life in India. We learn that his father owns the local Pondicherry zoo and that his modern age middle class family has been doing very well for themselves. As a teen Pi begins to explore various religions and soon defines himself as a follower of THREE religions: Christianity, Muslim, and Hinduism. We learn about his childhood, his mentors, and the many animals that he has grown up with and their behaviors.

Life of Pi Major Assignments
This novel discusses the dynamic of animals and humans on a regular basis; both how they act and what they can learn from each other. Pi in this novel teaches the reader that "the most dangerous animal in the zoo is man" (31).
